A Child's Feet

A child’s feet are remarkable. From their very first steps, they develop continuously as the child moves, plays, and explores the world around them. When you understand how feet develop, it also becomes clear why children’s shoes must be designed with the child in mind, and why their needs change throughout childhood.

Every step contributes to development

A child’s feet develop throughout childhood. The bones grow stronger, the muscles and ligaments mature, and it is movement that gradually shapes the foot.

This development cannot be rushed, but it can be supported. This has been Bundgaard’s guiding principle for more than 120 years and remains the foundation for how we design our shoes.

Each stage of childhood brings new movements, new experiences, and new needs. Our mission is to develop shoes that support this development and give children’s feet the freedom to move naturally through all stages of growth.

Development Over Age

Our knowledge of children’s feet forms the basis for the principles that characterize all Bundgaard shoes.

Because children’s feet grow quickly, we recommend measuring them regularly to ensure the shoes always fit properly. Since toes need room to move naturally, we design our shoes with ample space in the toe box. At the same time, a narrow and firm heel counter ensures that the shoe fits securely and stably around the heel.

When choosing a size, we also always recommend allowing for appropriate room to grow. Our size guide automatically includes the recommended growth allowance, making it easy to choose a size that fits today while also allowing room for natural growth.

All of our recommendations are based on the same understanding: A child’s feet are constantly developing, and shoes must support that development from the very first steps and throughout childhood.
