Everyday family life with Yulianna Sardar-August

Having lived in Copenhagen on and off for almost 12 years, Yulianna made the city her permanent home in 2020. A year and a half later, she became a mother. Today, Copenhagen forms the setting for their family life, from calm mornings at home to afternoons at the playground and warm days spent by the sea.

In this edition of Bundgaard Stories, Yulianna shares a glimpse into their everyday life, the memory of Valentin’s first steps and the qualities she values when choosing shoes for a growing child.

Tell us a little about yourself and your everyday life as a parent.

I have lived in Copenhagen on and off for nearly 12 years, and since 2020, it has truly become my permanent home. About a year and a half later, I became a mother, and I feel incredibly happy and grateful to be creating a family life here.

Before becoming a mother, work was a large part of my life. I worked as a full-time model for 18 years, which allowed me to travel and experience many different places. Over time, my interests began to move in a new direction, and for the past three years, I have worked within the wellness industry as a sound healer.

Today, everyday life has a different rhythm. Our days are naturally shaped by Valentin, kindergarten, work and the practical routines that come with being a family.

I have always loved routines, and I especially appreciate slow and calm mornings. With the support of my husband and a little preparation the evening before, our mornings are usually quite peaceful. It gives us the opportunity to begin the day without too much stress.

Once Valentin is at kindergarten, I have time to focus on myself and my work before picking him up again later in the day. I really value having that balance between my professional life, time for myself and our life together as a family.

What is on your mind at the moment?

Quite a lot, I must admit. Everyday family life naturally keeps me busy, and there are always many practical things to think about and organise.

At the moment, we are also preparing for our summer holiday on Bornholm, which we are all really looking forward to. It is lovely to have something ahead of us that we can anticipate together as a family.

What is your favourite place to go with children?

Ørstedsparken is one of the places we return to often. It is close to our home and has a wonderful, spacious playground where Valentin has plenty of room to play and move around.

Having a familiar place nearby makes everyday life easier. We can go there without having to make a big plan, and it has become a natural part of our life in the city.

When the weather is warm, the beach is also one of our favourite destinations. One of the things I love most about living in Copenhagen is that it is possible to be by the sea within just 30 minutes.

The city gives us the opportunity to move easily between different surroundings. We can spend time in the park, explore the neighbourhood or leave the city streets behind for a few hours by the water.

Do you remember Valentin's first steps?

I remember them very clearly, and I still have a video of that special moment.

My husband and I were at home, and Valentin was 11 months old. He was holding a toy in each hand when he suddenly began walking towards us.

He was still so wobbly, and the expression on his face was unforgettable. He looked happy and excited, but also completely confused by what was happening and by the fact that he was suddenly moving forward on his own.

Then he fell directly into our arms, laughing.

It was such a brief moment, but it meant so much to us. Watching him take those first steps felt like the beginning of a completely new stage. It is one of those memories that we will always treasure as parents.

What matters most to you when choosing shoes for Valentin?

It is important to me that his shoes are made from natural materials, produced with care and designed to last.

Children are constantly moving, so the shoes also need to have a good grip and feel comfortable throughout the day. Most importantly, they should allow his feet to develop and move naturally. 

For that reason, I look for barefoot or wide-fit designs that give his feet enough room. I want him to be able to play, walk and explore without his shoes restricting his natural movement.
