Interview with Kristine Garcia Højbjerre
In the middle of a busy day in Østerbro, we meet Kristine Garcia Højbjerre, who works in the fashion and lifestyle industry and is the mother of two little girls. We talk about family life and balance, finding space for yourself, a deep passion for fashion and creating a life filled with love and presence for your children.
Can you tell us a little about you, your family and what you do?
I'm 34 years old, married to Philip and together we have 1-year-old Carli and 4-year-old Lucca. We live in a cozy apartment in Østerbro. On a daily basis I work with fashion and am Store Manager. I love being active, working out, going on trips with the girls and enjoying Copenhagen.
What is important to you when choosing clothes or shoes for your children?
I've always had a huge passion for children's clothes and shoes. But Lucca goes to a nature kindergarten, so comfort and practicality are key. It has to fit well and be comfortable and, especially in the months we're entering, withstand wind and weather and long walks in the Dyrehaven. Carli is just starting to take her first steps. So fit and comfort are key.
Can you pick a few favorites from Bundgaard and tell us a little about why you chose them?
I just bought the Petit Winter for Carli. Perfect for the little trips she has with the nursery to the playground. They keep her warm and they fit properly when she's mucking around. I just bought Siggi for Lucca. It's the perfect boot and durable for winter, when they're outside as many days as possible. And it's both nice and practical in dark brown :)
What do you dream of passing on to your child, both in everyday life and in the long term?
I dream of giving my child security, love and presence in everyday life, as well as small joys such as play, curiosity, routines and having fun. In the long term, I want to instill values such as respect for others, caring, strength, self-confidence and the joy of learning. I also hope to give my child a healthy relationship with themselves and with life - so that they can stand strong while being open and loving towards others.
Did you go to Bundgaard as a child, or maybe your mother or grandmother?
No, not that I remember. But I've always had a strong impression of Bundgaard as a brand that stands for solid craftsmanship and shoes of absolute top quality - among the best on the market - with timeless and classic models that last year after year
How do you find time in a busy life, time for yourself and how do you prioritize family vs. "me time"? Do you feel like you've had to give up something after having children?
For me it's about balance and making space for each other. We prioritize both training and time with friends, and with a shared calendar we can easily make plans that work for both of us. There's a mutual trust that we both take care of the family and give each other 'me time'. Of course, right now we're in the middle of the hamster wheel with children aged 1 and 4, and it takes a lot out of us. But we try to enjoy the time we're in, knowing that the freedom will gradually return and that it will all become less demanding with time.
Has having children given you any new perspectives on your own childhood/growing up as an adopted child?
Definitely! Although adoption hasn't been a big part of my life, my own experience of a chaotic divorce as a child has made it even more important for me to create something different for my girls. I want to give them security, a stable framework and a balanced family life where I am both a role model and support - strong no matter what. At the same time, it's important for me to raise them with strong values, charity and care so that they grow up as good, independent individuals.
